1 Rodman DUI again

LOS ANGELES: Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been arrested for driving under the influence in California. Police in Newport Beach told USA Today that the 56-year-old was pulled over on Saturday night over an unspecifie­d vehicle code violation and was arrested after failing a breath test. Rodman also was arrested for DUI in 1999 and 2003. “It’s no secret Dennis has been struggling on and off with alcoholism the past 17 years,” Rodman’s agent, Darren Prince, told USA Today in a statement.

2 Quake kills one

LIMA: A powerful earthquake has struck off Peru’s coast, destroying homes in small, rural towns, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more. The sole fatality was a man crushed by a falling rock. Officials said many of those injured were in Caraveli province, a coastal area popular with tourists. Sixty-five people were injured. The US Geological Survey said Sunday’s early morning quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and was centred 40km from Acari in southweste­rn Peru. The quake jolted people awake as far away as the capital city of Lima, 560km from Acari.

3 Dance floor disaster

MADRID: Twenty-six people were injured when a floor collapsed at a Madrid nightclub. Emergency services for the Spanish capital say 11 of the injured revellers were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated for “bruises and light wounds.” The others were treated on site. Emergency services say a hole measuring 16sq m opened up on the upper floor of the nightclub in southern Madrid on Sunday.

4 Speedboat blast

BANGKOK: A tourist speedboat has exploded just off Thailand’s popular island of Phi Phi, injuring 16 people on board. Koh Phi Phi, located in the province of Krabi 780km south of the capital Bangkok, is known for its pristine beaches. The picturesqu­e Maya Bay was the main filming location of The Beach, a 2000 Hollywood film.

5 Volcano warning

PORT MORESBY: Papua New Guinea has started evacuating people from three islands off the north coast of the country’s mainland due to increased volcanic activity. The provincial government of East Sepik ordered the evacuation of around 3000 villagers on Biem Island after volcanic activity intensifie­d on Sunday, Radio New Zealand said. It follows the first eruption in recorded history of nearby Kadovar Island earlier this month.
