WILKIE’S BOWLS

- with Brett Wilkie

THE match of the Premier League Queensland season so far certainly lived up to expectations when Helensvale took on 2017 champions Broadbeach in a Round 3 blockbuster.

Unfortunately I missed the clash because I was in New Zealand on national duty so it was good to hear that the Hawks downed our archrivals Broadbeach by nine shots.

Andrew Howie took over the reins skipping my rink of Lynsey Clarke, Sam White and Anthony Kiepe to a vital 16-shot win.

This was the key because Helensvale lost on two of the three rinks to be, at that stage, the only unbeaten side.

But that didn’t last long because Pine Rivers turned the screws on the Hawks on Sunday in Round 4, winning by nine shots overall.

With Broadbeach beating Greenslopes 65-55 on Sunday it left five clubs level on six points – Broadbeach, Enoggera, Hamilton, Helensvale and Pine Rivers – but with the Bulls (8.5 rink wins) on top.

South Tweed and Tweed Heads had mixed fortunes, both winning one and losing one over the weekend. Wayne Wilson’s rink has started the season well for South Tweed with three wins from four.

But it is Canadian international Ryan Bester leading the pack, the only skip yet to lose a game.

After two double headers to start the season, the last seven rounds will be single games held each Saturday.

All Gold Coast-Tweed clubs are at home this weekend with South Tweed hosting Enoggera Eagles, Broadbeach Bulls playing Pine Rivers Pirates, Tweed Heads Ospreys against Greenslopes Geckos and Helensvale Hawks against Booval Bombers.

RISING

Broadbeach star Jessie Cottell is going well in the Queensland junior championships being played in Bundaberg.

Cottell won the pairs, triples and fours in last year’s titles and yesterday she won finals in pairs and fours yesterday.

She won the pairs with Nicky Cahill and they teamed up with Shervawn Wilson and Rebecca Rixon to win the fours.

Cottell is the reigning Australian under-18 girls pairs champion and is certainly going out with a bang in her last junior titles before she turns 18 later in the year.

The titles in Bundaberg wind up with singles tomorrow and Thursday.
