Immortal dies with allegations unanswered

- PHIL ROTHFIELD

RUGBY league Immortal Graeme “Changa” Langlands, MBE, has died at his Sutherland Shire nursing home at the age of 76.

The Kangaroos and St George legend, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, died on Saturday night after battling ill health for several months

His death comes just months after it was revealed police had charged him with historic allegations of indecent behaviour with a teenager from the 1980s.

In his final interview last April Langlands couldn’t remember what he ate for breakfast, let alone what may have happened 30 years ago.

Such was the sad decline of a rugby league Immortal. That dementia is why those allegations of indecent behaviour with a girl under 16 on the Gold Coast were never going to be proven or dismissed in court.

Yet sadly as he died in his sleep his reputation remained under a cloud. Not as a footy player but for his life off the field.

The NRL and St George Illawarra are helping the family with funeral arrangements.
