Threats over flag call

-

VICTORIAN Greens MP Lidia Thorpe says she won’t be silenced despite receiving death threats after calling for flags to be flown at half-mast on Australia Day.

Ms Thorpe received graphic rape and death threats after she “respectfully asked that we have a conversation about lowering our flag to recognise the grief and suffering caused to our First Nations people on January 26”.

“It’s been a tough few days for me, my staff and my family,” the Member for Northcote tweeted on Saturday.

“To personally receive these threats has shaken every one of us. But I will not live in fear.”

Some of the threats were signed ‘Real Australians’, Ms Thorpe said.

Ms Thorpe, a Gunnai-Gunditjmara woman, is the first Aboriginal woman elected to the Victorian parliament.
