GOLD COAST WRAP WITH UBET’S NICOLE THOMAS

-

INNERS

■ Desert Digby (Race 1)

It was a case of the boy against the girls in the two-year-old race and Desert Digby prevailed to land the biggest betting plunge of the day ($11-$4.80). Not always likely in the run, he sat worse-than-midfield, steadied off heels twice in traffic but pinched enough of a break in the straight to hang on for victory.

■ Diamonds Are (Race 8)

Favourite-backers rejoiced when Diamonds Are defied the nasty betting drift ($1.95-$3.40) to score in the last. After settling off the speed early, the gelding crept up mid-race and stormed down the outside to snatch the win right on the post.

LOSERS

■ Miss Bang (Race 1)

The daughter of Star Witness, Miss Bang, was the heavily supported favourite before she broke through the barriers. She underwent a vet-check making her price soar from $2.40 to $3.50. The late drift was spot-on and she couldn’t run-on well enough, never looking a winning possibility.

■ Beaudacious (Race 6)

Beaudacious ($3.40-$4) had to be one of the most disappointing runs of the day after seemingly having every chance in the run. When the mare sat in the boxseat and loomed up looking the winner, punters would’ve been confident but she weakened badly out of contention before the final 100m.

NEXT TIME

■ Too Hot To Hold (Race 1 )

In the last hour of betting, she got smashed from $7.50 in to $3.60. The two-year-old filly was her own worst enemy because she was bolting on the corner but raced greenly in the straight. Despite doing a few things wrong, she still almost won and looks to have plenty of ability. ■ Viaductress (Race 3)

Viaductress was the best thing beaten on the day. Savaged by punters at the $4.60, she started $2.60. It was an agonising watch, as she was slowly away, stuck to the inside without a run and went to the line untested. The ride was subsequently queried by stewards.

■ What Do Ya Think (Race 7)

It was a super performance by the well-supported roughie What Do Ya Think ($23-$18) to finish fourth. After getting dragged back from the wide gate, she had no room in the straight but hit the line strongly without ever seeing daylight. BIG BETS
