De Minaur in the frame

-

ALEX De Minaur’s spectacular summer surge has shunted the teenager into Davis Cup calculations.

At just 18, De Minaur has posted seven wins from 10 matches this month over more experienced and higherranked opposition, raising the possibility he could be picked for singles duties by Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt.

Hewitt, who is De Minaur’s mentor and idol, made his Cup debut as an 18-year-old against the US in 1999 and progressed to claim a string of Cup records in a long and glorious representative career.

De Minaur is certain to be nominated this week in Hewitt’s squad alongside Nick Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, John Millman, Thanasi Kokkinakis and John Peers for the tie against Germany in Brisbane on Friday week.

Gold Coaster Bernard Tomic is the youngest – at 17 years, 135 days old – to have played in Davis Cup for Australia.
