ENRIGHT WIN DELIVERS A PRO SEEDINGS SHOCK

-

KOBIE Enright will start this week’s Burleigh Pro with a target firmly on her back after the 19-year-old stamped her potential by claiming a maiden World Qualifying Series win.

The Snapper Surfriders Club member yesterday won the first Australian World Qualifying Series event of 2018 at Maroubra Beach in Sydney, nailing the title with a convincing victory over NSW teen Molly Picklum.

Last year the former Australian junior champion from Tweed Heads was runner-up in the same event to Macy Callaghan, but her two best scores of 7.50 and 8.00 yesterday ensured she would go one better.

Rated 22 from last year’s WQS rankings, Enright is now the confirmed No.1 women’s seed for the Burleigh Pro at Burleigh Point starting Thursday.

“Coming second is really tough and I definitely didn’t want it to happen again,” Enright said of last year’;s disappointment.

“I’d rather get fifth or first but not second again. The ultimate goal at every event is to win but this one is sweeter than most.”

Enright took down fellow Snapper Rocks Surfriders member Pacha Luque-Light in a tight quarter-final.

In the men’s competition in Sydney, Snappers Rocks’ Sheldon Simkus reached the semi-finals before claiming third after being eliminated by eventual winner Shane Campbell of Cronulla.
