More deaths feared
LOS ANGELES: Detectives are considering sending in cadaver dogs to determine if the “House of Horrors” couple had any more than the 13 children found at the residence last week. They are also planning to carry out DNA tests on the children to see if they are all related. Last week police discovered 13 malnourished children, some chained to bedposts, at the Turpin home in Perris, California. The children had suffering from years of abuse. The children’s parents David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, were each charged on Thursday with 12 counts of torture.
Pope farewelled
LIMA: More than one million people turned out Sunday for Pope Francis’ final mass in Peru, giving him a warm and heartfelt farewell that contrasted sharply with the outcry he caused in neighbouring Chile by accusing sex abuse victims of slandering a bishop. Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, who publicly rebuked the pope on Saturday for those remarks, joined the pontiff and dozens of fellow bishops on a tented altar at a Lima airfield to celebrate the mass. The mass wrapped up Pope Francis’ two nation visit. Cardinal O’Malley had said the Pope’s remarks were “a source of great pain for survivors of sexual abuse”.
Goodbye to singer
DUBLIN: Hundreds of mourners turned out to say their goodbyes to Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, as her coffin was set to lie in repose. The Irish singer was found dead aged 46 in a hotel on central London’s Park Lane a week ago. On Saturday afternoon her coffin was carried into St Joseph’s Church, in County Limerick, close to the secondary school O’Riordan attended. a funeral mass will take place at the Church of Saint Ailbe in Ballybricken, County Limerick, at 11.30am today. An inquest into her death has now been adjourned until April 3, as medical test results are yet to conclude.
Yemen aid package
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia yesterday announced $1.5 billion in new aid for Yemen, where nearly three years of conflict has devastated the local economy and pushed millions to the brink of famine, causing what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The kingdom said yesterday the coalition it heads in Yemen would also “lead the expansion of additional Yemeni ports” to receive cargo and aid.
Market bombed
BANKGOK: Police say three people have been killed and 18 injured by a bomb that exploded in a market in southern Thailand. Police Lt Eakapong Rattanachai said an attacker parked a motorcycle rigged with explosives near the market and bought goods there to blend in with the crowd yesterday morning. Lt Eakapong said the bomb exploded when the attacker left the market area. It happened in Yala province, one of three southern provinces battling Muslim militants.
