No coach, no probs for Nick

-

DAVIS Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has backed Nick Kyrgios’s decision to go it alone in his quest for grand slam fulfilment.

Kyrgios’s decision not to hire a full-time coach has again been the topic of debate after the Australian No.1 advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open before losing to No.3 seed Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday night.

Kyrgios confirmed he has no intention of hiring a coach, preferring to use Matt Reid, Jason Stoltenberg and Hewitt as sounding boards.

“I’ve lost one match this year, so I’m doing all right,” Kyrgios said. “I like kind of doing things on my own terms. I just like the freedom.”

Mark Philippoussis also backed the decision, saying he believed Kyrgios should hire a new coach only on his terms “and when he’s ready”.

Hewitt said while some believe having a full-time coach would help Kyrgios reach the next level, he doesn’t need one right now.
