Kerber primed in Open

-

TOURNAMENT favourite Angelique Kerber is brimming with self-belief ahead of the Australian Open quarter-finals despite surviving a huge scare.

Kerber joined No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki and No.1 Simona Halep as remaining women’s seeds to escape threeset epics after her 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over surprise packet Hseih Su-Wei on Rod Laver Arena.

The 2016 Open champion was on the brink of a shock exit yesterday as Hsieh had her running to all corners of the court in the enthralling twohour and eight-minute battle.

Kerber trailed 4-5 late in the second set before winning three straight games to send it to a decider, eventually winning to set up a clash with No.17 seed Madison Keys.
