SQUASH OPEN PROVES A HIT FOR YOUNGSTERS
GOLD Coast’s next batch of Commonwealth Games stars could be on their way after a solid showing at the Australian Junior Open.
Held at the Nerang Squash Club from Thursday through to Sunday, the Open featured juniors from under11 through to under-19s.
In a hot field dominated by other states, Gold Coaster Lachlan Coxsedge snared third in the boys under-19 competition.
Shana Coxsedge repeated the effort in the under-13 girls age group, while Jessamay Prior had to be satisfied with the under-15 girls Consolation Plate.
Lachlan Craven lost the under-13 boys Consolation Plate decider, while Flynn Bartlett finished ninth in the under-11 boys, won by Joshua Rahul Raj.
While these competitors are too young for April’s Commonwealth Games, the tournament showcased why Australia has claimed 30 medals at the Games since 1998, the most successful nation with nine golds, one more than England.
Carrara Squash Club will host the Australian Club Championships on September 21-23.
