Sharks looking way ahead to 2019

THE 2018 NEAFL season is yet to begin but Southport have started their recruiting drive for the 2019 season.

The once powerhouse club is wasting no time in trying to become one of the leading clubs in Queensland again with new head coach Steve Daniel leading the push to se- cure flag-driving talent.

Daniel took a number of Southport officials to Darwin – where the summer competition is mid-season – to cast their eye over a number of potential players.

“We went up to have a look at some players and potential recruits,” Daniel said.

“A lot of boys from Victoria and South Australia are playing in the competition up there and there were two or three in particular that we wanted to go up and have a look at.

“In the first two weekends after Christmas they play double headers so after two days we saw all eight teams play.”

It was all in preparation for 2019 as Daniel looks to continue improving a list that has struggled in recent years.

“We are only talking six to seven months before the end of the season this year so we go up now, introduce ourselves and get some contacts. A few are very keen,” he said.

“I have always done that when I have been doing recruit for the clubs I have been at.

“We spoke to seven players and got seven names that we never would have got who we really didn’t know about. We will keep an eye on them and ring them in September.”
