Cottell excels in title assault
BROADBEACH up and comer Jessie Cottell has finished agonisingly short of a grand slam of junior state titles in her final appearance before moving to open ranks.
Cottell was in sublime form along with Nick Cahill to win the open pairs, open triples and open fours at the under-18 titles in Bundaberg.
Cottell’s triples and fours teammate Rebecca Rixon, from the Sunshine Coast, proved a stumbling block in the blue ribbon girls singles event, beating the Gold Coaster 21-17 for the title.
In an interesting aside, Rixon is now awaiting possible selection for Malta in the Commonwealth Games, along with her older sister Connie due to their heritage.
Cottell still had a championship series to remember with three golds and a silver.
Bundaberg star Nick Cahill also fell short of a state grand slam, going down in the boys singles semi-final.
Cahill was then beaten by Helensvale product Shane White in the bronze playoff.
White also claimed silver in the triples after losing the final to the mixed combo of Cahill, Cottell and Rixon.
Another Helensvale player, Corey Marshall, claimed a bronze in the under-15 pairs with John Hammond from Roma in the former’s first state championships.
The Queensland junior squads have been selected, with seven boys and seven girls announced after presentations at the State Junior Championships.
Unfortunately the Gold Coast missed out for what with Brett Wilke
may be the first time ever. The teams are: Girls:

ENOGGERA Eagles Eagles have leapfrogged Broadbeach Bulls to lead the Premier League Queensland series after a three-rink win against South Tweed Sharks.
The Sharks’ season now hangs in the balance as they take on Pine Rivers at home on Saturday.
Tweed Heads Ospreys will be full of confidence after a three-rink win over Greenslopes Geckos. They now do battle with the Bulls at home.
Third and fourth placed Helensvale and Hamilton will be looking to claim early advantage in the race for a second chance come finals.
The Power host the Hawks in Round 6.
