Dream is quickly the reality for teen

- RHYS O’NEILL @Rhys_ONeill_

YESTERDAY, Abby Gain was just happy with a day off school.

Today the 14-year-old surfer will be in fantasyland if she can knock off in-form Kobie Enright and progress from her opening women’s heat at the Burleigh Pro.

Gain was gifted a wildcard for the event, and with it come few expectations but a stack of excitement.

While last weekend’s World Qualifying Series winner Enright is among the top seeds, Gain is happy just to be in the competition – even if she has been forced to wait a day due to poor swells yesterday.

“It was good just to have a day off school,” the Miami High student laughed.

“I didn’t find out my heat (draw) until (yesterday morning), so that was so exciting just to see I was up against Kobie.

“She’s obviously in great form and it’s just awesome to be in the competition. “I’ll just try my best.” Gain had no dramas with the women’s event being pushed back a day.

“I’m not too bummed about it, I still got to see the event,” she said. “It’s always good to be there on the first day and see the vibe of the event.

“It’s a fair call and they can afford to lose a couple of hours of competition.”
