NEW MOON RISING: HOWL’S HEADING BACK TO BROADBEACH

- EMILY SELLECK emily.selleck@news.com.au

ICONIC Gold Coast nightclub Howl at the Moon is set to reopen in March at the Envy Hotel in Broadbeach.

Howl thrived for 10 years in Broadbeach’s Niecon Plaza but – claiming their landlord wouldn’t renew their lease – co-owners Lou Cerantonio and Mario Zulli relocated to the Surfers Paradise riverfront in mid-2014.

The pair shut the doors on the Glitter Strip institution in October last year with no plans to reopen – but that all changed when Envy Hotel owner Peter ‘Tommy’ Thompson got in touch.

Mr Thompson said he remembered the “good old days” of Howl at Broadbeach.

“The new space will be upstairs and spread over two levels with a new stage above the spiral staircase,” he said.

“The outdoor area will overlook the mall ... it will be reminiscent of the old Broadbeach venue, but better.”

The new Howl will open on Saturday, March 17.

Last year, Mr Cerantonio said he blamed “slow” redevelopment of the riverside, which he had believed Gold Coast City Council would make into the city’s South Bank.

No zebra crossing across Gold Coast Highway from the end of Cavill Ave also didn’t help.

“Partly it is our fault – we made the wrong call bringing Howl here,” he said.

The original Howl at Broadbeach had dancing waiters, duelling twin pianos and was a huge drawcard, with appearances from celebrities including Paris Hilton.
