Sara ready for home Games
SARA Tait believes she has done enough to earn a spot on the Australian Commonwealth Games team and is confident she can win the country’s first paratriathlon medal at her home on the Gold Coast.
Triathlon Australia will announce the six-person – three women and three men – Commonwealth Games paratriathlon team this month and Tait is hoping to secure one of two discretionary spots up for grabs for the females.
ITU world champion Emily Tapp and Gold Coaster Bill Chaffey have both secured automatic entry.
Tait, who was born with spina bifida, won PTWC women’s event at the St Kilda OTU Paratriathlon Oceania Championships last month in what was the final major hitout before selectors decide on the team.
It followed a strong 2017 campaign for the 20-year-old who was a national champion in 2016 and world duathlon champion in 2015.
“I’m confident I have done pretty well,” Tait said. “I have made a few errors along the way and you can only move on and learn from them.
“Generally, I think I have really improved as an athlete and I think I’ll be ready if I get selected.”
Tait said competing in a Games just a few hundred metres from her Labrador home would be a moment she would never forget.
“I don’t want to get my hopes up too high but I’m pretty confident that I possibly could make podium,” Tait said.
