TWEED PRO PUMPING
THE decision of organisers to move the Tweed Coast Pro has paid off for Kingscliff’s Codie Klein who used her local knowledge to perfection.
Pumping surf convinced organisers to shift the event from Cabarita to Kingscliff to capitalise on the 1m to 1.5m waves peeling down the sandbank at Kingscliff in conditions that allowed the opening round of women’s competition – and opening two rounds of the men’s draw – to be completed.
Klein advanced after using her local knowledge in the increasing swell and strong currents to be in the right place at the right time.
“This is the best I have seen the sand here for a while so thought it could be a possibility that the event would be here,” said Klein, who advanced with a modest heat score of 10.50.
“I hadn’t surfed here much in the last few years but as soon as I get out there it is so familiar, which definitely helps.
“It’s a great spot for an event and having all the shops right here it is awesome for the local community so I’m stoked to have everyone in town.”
Klein is out to push deep into her home event but faces tough competition from inform Gold Coaster Kobie Enright, who has taken out back-to-back events on the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series tour.
Enright won the Carve Pro at Maroubra and fellow QS 1000 event the Burleigh Pro at the weekend and hits the surf today after a bye in Round 1.
While last week’s Burleigh Pro traded on the iconic location with increased infrastructure and event activations on the headland site, the Tweed Coast Pro is a nimble event able to take advantage of the best conditions in the area. It’s something that impressed Victorian Joe Van Dijk.
“It’s so sick that this event can move around,” Van Dijk said.
“I’m sure nowhere in this area is breaking as good as here, it is pumping at the moment.
“It’s nice to come to an event and be able to showcase our surfing in really good waves.”
The Tweed Coast Pro runs until Sunday and will be broadcast live over the weekend at www.worldsurfleague.com.
