Cockfight massacre

MEXICO CITY: Authorities in northern Mexico say gunmen shot up a clandestine cockfight arena in the Chihuahua state capital, killing six people and wounding 14. The state prosecutor’s office says in a statement that several masked attackers fired at people gathered at the “Santa Maria” cockfight club late Saturday off a highway on the southern edge of Chihuahua city.

Stonehenge at risk

LONDON: Construction of a tunnel past Stonehenge could spell the loss of a “unique” site which can trace the presence of people back to the last Ice Age, experts warn. Perfectly preserved hoofprints of wild cattle known as aurochs have recently been found at excavations near the famous stone circle in Wiltshire, University of Buckingham archaeologist David Jacques says.

Promise for unity

NICOSIA: Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades vowed to push on with attempts to reunify the ethnically divided island nation and to improve the economic fortunes of its people after he was re-elected by a wide margin Sunday. Mr Anastasiades defeated leftleaning independent challenger Stavros Malas in a runoff election. Mr Anastasiades received 56 per cent of the vote, compared to 44 per cent for Mr Malas.

Russia retaliates

DAMASCUS: Russian jets have intensified their raids on rebelheld towns and cities in Syria’s northern Idlib province a day after rebels shot down a Russian warplane and killed its pilot. Civil defence sources say air raids struck several towns and that several deaths and dozens of injuries were reported.
