GIANT SQUID TAKES OVER SURFERS

- KRISTY MUIR

YOU wouldn’t want to come face-to-face with a giant squid, jellyfish or octopus in the ocean.

But these inflatable sea creatures are expected to draw a crowd to Surfers Paradise this month.

For the third year internationally renowned “inflatablist” Luke Egan has returned to the Gold Coast from Britain to exhibit his dramatic, playful and largescale installations as part of the Sand Safari Arts Festival.

Mr Egan said the aquatic invasion made for quite the spectacle for both tourists and locals.

“We always get great reactions from people,” he said. “We brought over two full pallets ... from the UK of our equipment.”

It took almost 11 hours to install the four giant colourful squid on the beachfront yesterday and they are just the first of the creatures from the deep to come to life in the tourist precinct.

The Sand Safari Arts Festival runs from February 9 to 25.
