RAINBOW NATION EYES POT OF GOLD

-

AFTER finishing seventh on the medal tally at Glasgow 2014, South Africa will send a powerful team to represent the rainbow nation .

Leading the charge will be Rio 2016 gold medallist Caster Semenya (athletics), silver medallists Cameron van der Burgh, Chad le Clos (swimming), Luvo Manyonga and Sunette Viljoen (athletics), and bronze medallists Henri Schoeman (triathlon) and the men’s rugby sevens side.

One of the great stories of the South African team will be the participation of triathlete Wian Sullwand after being involved in a harrowing robbery attempt in December.

The former world junior champion and his training partners were held at gunpoint while bandits broke in to his parents’ farmhouse in South Africa.

“In the past during some races, I tended to panic,” he said. “I don’t think that will happen again because whatever happens can never be as traumatic as what I went through in December.”
