Surgery puts Scheer in good shape

- TOM BOSWELL

BRAD Scheer will go in to the 2018 season free from a wrist problem that has hampered him in recent years.

Scheer went under the knife at the end of October to remove a ganglion cyst that he had carried for multiple seasons leading in to his arrival at the Gold Coast last year.

The 19-year-old said it didn’t affect him during games but had hindered his ability to make the most of his strength and conditioning training.

“I had it for a few years and didn’t really say much,” Scheer said.

“It would just come and go and eventually I said something and the next week I was having surgery.

“I missed about six weeks and it wasn’t too major or anything. It is all good now and I’m ready to go.

“It puts a lot of pressure on them and hurts when I put pressure on the ground with my wrist so a lot of stuff in the gym would be affected like when I was doing push-ups, bench press or even squats and stuff.”

“I didn’t feel it playing footy when I was in the moment.”

Scheer, taken with pick 67 of the 2016 AFL draft, made a dream debut in Round 7 last year, playing in Gold Coast’s win against Geelong.

Scheer said his fitness was back to where it needed to be after the surgery as he prepares to fight for a place in the club’s Round 1 team.
