Carrigan ‘so proud’ of role

- DWAYNE GRANT

AS far as consolation prizes go, it’s a pretty sweet one.

Champion cyclist Sara Carrigan will today be named as co-mayor of the athletes village along with former Olympic swimmer Mark Stockwell.

“It would have been so good to compete at a Commonwealth Games in my home town,” Ms Carrigan said of hanging up her race helmet long before this year’s event. “But being asked to be village mayor is awesome.”

Ms Carrigan, who won gold at the 2004 Olympics, played a key role during the bid process showcasing the city to Commonwealth Games Federation delegates.

“I feel so proud and excited to be selected to represent the village and stand beside Mark,” the Mermaid Beach resident said. “You also end up as a confidant, motivator and supporter for all the athletes who may be nervous as they prepare to compete for their nations, some for the first time.”
