A ‘FAMILY POOL’ OF RENOWN

- SUZANNE SIMONOT suzanne.simonot@news.com.au

A FATHER and son duo have cemented their place in history, leading the construction of a new infinity edge pool atop The Star Gold Coast’s new centrepiece, The Darling.

Mudgeeraba men Jeff and Jaye Hearn from Surfside Pools Commercial have clocked up more than 1000 hours together building the state-of-theart pool which forms part of the luxury development, which also boast a swish restaurant and bar overlooking the Coast’s skyline.

The duo agree being on the frontline of transforming the iconic Broadbeach property into a worldclass integrated resort has been exciting – and has come with definite perks.

“The majority of our projects over the past few years have been Brisbane based so it’s been a nice change being able to work so close to home,” Jeff said.

Jaye said the view from their work site was “definitely amazing”.

“I feel proud of what we have created, it’s a good feeling knowing that we built something that will be visited and photographed by people from all around the world,” he said. “You get a great breeze up there so I am really intrigued to see it once the water is in and the finishing touches are made.”

Jeff joined Surfside Pools not long after the company was contracted to build The Star’s original pool over 30 years ago.

Son Jaye, 23, has been part of the team for almost two years but has worked with his dad in the pool game since he 16.

Cantilevered steel perched 67m above ground forms the basis of the gravity-defying infinity edge pool, which extends 5m beyond the side of the 17-storey tower.

Five prefabricated steel sections were hoisted to the rooftop before 3000 tonnes of concrete was used to form the pool.
