TO DC FROM THE GC
Gold Coast student Hannah Goodman describes her life as an intern in the United States
Gold Coast student Hannah Goodman writes about her once-in-alifetime opportunity to spend a semester as an intern in Washington
I WAS lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity to attend the Washington Internship Institute for a semester in September 2017.
This experience allowed me to complete an internship and study in Washington DC simultaneously.
My chosen internship placement was at the World Affairs Council, which is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organisation dedicated to facilitating collaboration throughout the global education and international affairs community by hosting an array of educational events.
My internship centred on working closely with the CEO and president to organise prestigious events at venues such as the Pakistan and Afghanistan embassies.
During these events, there were opportunities to network with some of the United States’ most elite professionals including lawyers, politicians and journalists. One of the subjects I took as part of my study was
Global Women’s Leadership Development, which allowed me to expand my perspective on global women’s issues.
As for the DC lifestyle,
I can hands-down say that moving abroad for five months was the most life-changing and eye-opening experience of my life. It is one experience to travel with family and friends, but it is a completely different experience on your own.
My time in DC was beyond amazing, from the lifelong friends I made to the neverending list of tourist attractions there are to see.
While completing my internship, I travelled to New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
I was even lucky enough to be welcomed by my friend’s family in San Francisco for thanksgiving, which is an experience I will never forget.
If you are looking to study abroad but also want something prestigious to add to your resumé, applying to study in Washington is a must do.
