‘I fear she’ll kill the kids’

A DESPERATE grandmother has called for her drink-driving daughter to be jailed before she kills her grandchildren.

“My nightmare is she’s going to kill the children,” said the Gold Coast woman, who did not wish to be named.

The woman claimed her 37year-old daughter was six times over the legal blood alcohol limit when she crashed a BMW carrying her two young children, aged seven and eight, at Tallebudgera last week.

She said she was speaking out because she wanted heavier sentences dished out to drunk drivers.

“I believe that help should come with a heavy hand,” she said.

“(The) threat of a custodial sentence is the only time I saw fear brought to her eyes, even if it’s just 30 to 60 days (behind bars). The car was a crumpled heap. She’s a high functioning alcoholic and on intravenous drugs.”

Police said a car had crashed on Tallebudgera Creek Rd on Thursday and the driver was due to appear in Coolangatta Magistrates Court on May 2.

“She’s extremely intelligent, beautiful ... but a complete wreck of a human being,” she said.

The woman claimed her daughter had been in trouble for drink-driving at least once in the past 18 months, where she lost her license for six months and received a $1000 fine.

After Thursday’s crash – where she said her daughter was barely conscious behind the wheel – the grandmother said she did not feel safe knowing people like her daughter were allowed back onto the road.

“(Her youngest daughter) was shouting at her to slow down and she hit an embankment and rolled,” she said.

“The children got out and helped their almost unconscious mother.”

She said her daughter had been on a downward spiral after breaking up with one partner and another relationship where she was introduced to hard drugs.

She said felt time behind bars was the best way to send a message to those who endanger lives by driving drunk.

“These people are never jailed, she’ll lose her licence for a year. She’s lost her licence before and she’s continued to drive,” she said.
