REDZEL LEADS CHARGE OF LIGHTNING BRIGADE

- LEO SCHLINK

NOMINATIONS for Saturday’s Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) have been extended after the Flemington feature attracted just 13 entries.

When entries closed yesterday, six Group 1 winners had been nominated including last season’s winner Terravista and this year’s favourite Redzel.

With Lindsay Park’s Catchy (Blue Diamond Stakes), Redkirk Warrior (Newmarket Handicap) and Sheidel (Oakleigh Plate) and Tony McEvoy’s Hey Doc (Manikato Stakes) nominated, there is plenty of quality. But Racing Victoria has decided to extend the nomination deadline until 9am today (Qld time).

Pending additional entries, the seven other potential runners are Ball Of Muscle, Formality, Limestone, Missrock, Rock Magic, Super Too and Supido.

Everest winner Redzel headlines this year’s edition of the weight-for-age Lightning, indicating he is on track for another huge performance with an impressive barrier trial win in Sydney last week.

The Sydney-trained gelding is unbeaten in two starts at Flemington.
