Anderson to get tails and tongues wagging

- SUZANNE SIMONOT suzanne.simonot@news.com.au

FROM New York’s Times Square to the Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts (HOTA) – this low-frequency performance is guaranteed to set tongues (and tails) wagging.

HOTA’s inaugural artistin-residence, avant-garde performance artist Laurie Anderson, will bring her acclaimed Concert for Dogs to the Coast on June 24.

Hundreds of humans and their canine companions turned out on a freezing night in New York to see Anderson’s second-ever Concert for Dogs in 2016 following its inaugural performance at the Sydney Opera House in 2010 as part of the Vivd Festival.

Composed for and performed at a frequency suitable for dogs by Anderson, a vocalist who plays violin, keyboards and percussion, the concert plays HOTA’s Outdoor Stage on June 24 (register at HOTA.com.au). Anderson performs the work

on instruments including the tape-bow violin, which she invented in the 1970s.

While the stage is usually a dog-free council venue, the city has granted special permission for dogs on leads to attend as long as owners clean up after them.

One of America’s most celebrated artists, Anderson will become HOTA’s inaugural artist in residence from June 18-24 when she collaborates, mentors and shares ideas across a series of events and performances, from storytelling for the future to performing in the dark.
