Fined for New Year’s headbutt

- LEA EMERY

A MAN who headbutted a security guard at his local pub on New Year’s Eve has been ordered to complete 40 hours community service.

Shane Robin Stevens, 36, pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court to one count of assault.

Stevens made the plea despite barely remembering the night because he was so drunk.

The court heard Stevens had visited the Pacific Pines Tavern about 7.30pm on New Year’s Eve and by 10.30pm was heavily intoxicated. He was asked to leave by security and walked outside with them.

Once outside Stevens put his fists up at one of the guards before lunging forward with his head. Stevens’ head hit the security guard on the bridge of his nose which started to bleed. The guard did not need treatment.

A victim impact statement said the guard suffered headaches for four days following the headbutting.

Defence lawyer Brianna Bullock said Stevens, a labourer, had been going to the Pacific Pines Tavern for 11 years and considered it his “local”.

“He accepts the facts but does not have a good recollection of the facts due to his intoxication,” she said.
