BERT DRURY TURNS 100:

It turns out getting back in the driver’s seat is just like riding a bike – even if the bike in question is of the motor variety and the driver is celebrating his 100th birthday.

Bert Drury marked his century milestone with a gathering of not just friends and family but members of the BSA, Military Brotherhood and Ulysses Motorcycle Clubs.

Mr Drury, a WWII veteran who served in the RAAF in Port Moresby, grew up in Lithgow.

As well as motorbikes he was fond of bee keeping, fishing, shooting and hockey.

He served his country from 1943 and helped in the aftermath of the war until 1946.

Mr Drury proposed to his beloved late wife Jean on Christmas Day 1938 after wooing her with a bike ride.

The pair were married in 1940 and went on to have three sons, nine grandchildren and 15 great grand children.

Mr Drury’s career included stints as a coal miner and then at the rubber works but he was best known as a bush carpenter.

The birthday festivities took place at Bolton Clarke’s Galleon Gardens community at Currumbin.
