Save our wetland and future generations will thank us

- MARGARET CRAIG

I AM writing in regards to Black Swan Lake and the fact that it and all its wildlife are under threat just for the sake of a carpark. Where do our priorities lie?

I have been watching this story unfold since before Christmas and am dismayed in learning that the GCCC don’t seem to care.

We Australians should be saving this wetland for future generations to enjoy and the birds and animals that inhabit it. I noticed that some of the swans have an ID tag which were put on their legs in 2015 to be monitored and researched for Birdlife Australia. And these birds are territorial. They cannot be shooed away as they will return. It’s their home.

And the Latham Snipe is a migratory endangered bird and the Japanese are also tracking their routes.

Make a difference and keep this lake. The future generation will thank you. It is not toxic, if it was there wouldn’t be such abundant wildlife.

When my granddaughter heard about what was happening up there she wanted to be there to save the birds. She is only eight.

People from all over Australia and the world know about this now and it makes the GCCC look out of touch. After all, I thought it was trying to boost tourism not destroy it.

I live on the south coast of NSW and have holidayed on the Gold Coast at times but I’m afraid because of this I’ll be finding another destination in future as this has really spoiled it for me. And that means the Commonwealth Games are out too.
