Tippett in the mix at Diamonds training

- AMANDA LULHAM

QUEENSLANDER Gretel Tippett will join the Australian Commonwealth Games netball squad as a training partner, a key addition for when the Diamonds ramp up their preparation next month.

The Firebirds goal attack and Gold Coast native (pictured) was yesterday named in a quartet of future stars who will train alongside the 12strong Games squad at a camp in Canberra from March 13-16.

Three Victorians – defender Emily Mannix, midcourter Kate Moloney and shooter Tegan Philip – will also be training partners when the squad, including returning mum Laura Geitz, gathers for the first time since being selected for the April Games.

Australia will start favourites for the event and own a rich history at the Games.

With the squad restricted to just 12 for the Games, coach Lisa Alexander said it is crucial she has every position on the court covered with the addition of four players also making training sessions easier.

“We utilised training partners in our preparations for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 netball World Cup, and the results speak for themselves,” said Alexander of Australia’s wins at both tournaments.

“The fact that we can have four strong, skilled Diamonds further extend the team during the training camp shows the depth of our squad.

“The training partners will take part in all aspects of our camp, from performance analysis to match play, which is not only invaluable to the team, but also to the athletes themselves.’’

Tippett has been a mainstay at the Firebirds and was in the mix for Aussie selection but narrowly missed a spot.

Australia’s first match of the Gold Coast Games is against Northern Ireland on April 5.
