Talent shines on world stage
EIGHT world champions are among an outstanding field of 10 nominees for the Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year award, to be revealed at Southport tonight.
The list highlights the achievements of Gold Coasters on the international stage over the past year.
From sailors and track athletes to kayakers and BMX riders, Gold Coasters have dominated the world, something Sports Gold Coast will celebrate at a gala dinner at Southport. It will be an apt celebration for the 50th annual presentation of the award and one that is set to build excitement just weeks out from the start of the Commonwealth Games.
The Sports Star of the Year is among seven presentations to be made tonight.
Others include the Sports Star of the Year for an athlete with a disability; Mayor’s sports award; people’s choice award; Sporting Hall of Fame inductee; Daphne Pirie Spirit of Sport Medal; and Junior Sports volunteer of the year.
The Gold Coast Bulletin junior sports star Riley Day, who also won News Corp’s national junior sports star award last year, will also be recognised for her outstanding efforts, which have her on the cusp of winning selection in Australia’s track team for the upcoming Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
