QLD PAIR’S BLINDING START TO NATIONALS

- PAUL MALONE

QUEENSLAND sprinters Trae Williams and Riley Day have laid down first-round markers for tonight’s Australian 100m championships finals at Carrara Stadium.

An excited Williams, the 20-year-old defending men’s champion, set his third personal-best 100m time in less than three weeks last night when he was the fastest man out of the heats in 10.20sec (tailwind 1.6m/sec).

Day’s chances of becoming a 17-year-old national open 100m athletics champion tonight improved even further when seasoned Melissa Breen disclosed she was battling sciatic nerve problems.

Day was the faster qualifier in 11.76sec (tailwind 0.4m/sec) from the women’s 100m heats, with two more rounds at the Australian championships to be negotiated today.

The Beaudesert teenager said it would be a “great honour’’ if she could win a national title at such a precocious age.
