Many faces of Games centrepiece
CARRARA Stadium was undergoing another facelift last night as preparations begin in earnest for the April 4 Opening Ceremony for the Commonwealth Games.
The venue played host to the national track and field championships and Commonwealth Games trials over the past four days, with athletes thrilled at the transformation of the Suns’ home ground into a world-class athletics arena.
World champion hurdler Sally Pearson said it was great to be in the stadium where the Games would be held.
“It was really nice to be able to get a little taste of what we’re going to get at the Commonwealth Games,” she said.
“I’ve raced on really fast tracks all around the world and this is certainly up there.”
The trials were the one and only opportunity for the venue to operate as an athletics venue before the Games start.
And last night, the transformation for the opening ceremony had already begun with grass on the infield being torn up to prepare the venue for the opening ceremony.
