Lack of urgency in repairing Springbrook road is shocking

-

I CONTINUE to be amazed at the lack of activity on the Mudgeeraba to Springbrook Rd – the main access route to Springbrook National Park and some of the Lamington National Park’s iconic attractions.

This road, the lifeblood of the plateau’s community is supposed to be repaired under natural disaster relief funding by the Federal and State Governments.

It is astounding that it could be built and serviceable by 1926, built largely by hand using blood, sweat and tears with a little help from explosives, bullock teams and horse drawn scoops.

Yet a year after Cyclone Debbie we are incapable of barely starting the remedial work save the clean-up (which was finished in three months).

The GCCC does not escape “scot free”. It is their green behind the gold, but we do not see any lobbying, agitating or complaints about the complete lack of activity.

In contrast, the smaller, lowbudget Scenic Rim council is going ahead in leaps and bounds resurfacing roads such as Beechmont to Binna Burra, in my opinion breathtaking, but inferior to Purlingbrook Falls, Canyon Lookout etc.

I can only surmise that they not only have the smaller communities in mind but are also mindful of supporting them, and are certainly more aware of the Commonwealth Games in some 50 odd days.

Mayor Tom Tate and company should be alert to the fact that not all international visitors want to spend all tourism time on the beach, some would prefer, or at least hold on equal footing, a visit to the subtropical rainforest paradise just 24km west of the M1 (if the road was fixed).

All levels of government should hang their heads in shame for not at least even trying to fix this historic road connecting the ocean to the hinterland, or as some might say, ocean to the sky.
