Black Swan Lake death toll rising

-

RESIDENTS are alerting Gold Coast City councillors about threats to kill more animals at Black Swan Lake following the discovery of dead birds in rubbish bins.

But their calls to stop the Gold Coast Turf Club from filling in what the council refers to as “the borrow pit” have failed to field responses, except from a handful of councillors who support the freshwater wetlands remaining.

The Bulletin has been told an early investigation of the death of a dusky moorhen suggests it was bashed.

GECKO campaign co-ordinator Lois Levy yesterday joined residents who had written to councillors, expressing the “deep repugnance and distress” about wildlife being killed.

Resident Karen McCarthy wrote to councillors early yesterday as tensions increased between supporters of the lake and opponents who threatened on social media to kill birds.
