Cabarita to be surfing reserve
ONE of the most consistent surfing breaks for Gold Coast and northern NSW boardriders has been named as the next surfing reserve.
Cabarita Beach, just south of Kingscliff, will become Australia’s 20th national surfing reserve.
Cabarita was selected by a National Surfing Reserves committee after it was assessed as an “iconic place of intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value”.
“The community is stoked to see our surfing environment honoured in this outstanding way,” said Dr Kerrie FoxwellNorton, chairwoman of the committee that campaigned for the reserve and the first female head of a surfing reserve in the world.
The National Surfing Reserves Board comprised a panel of coastal experts led by Professor Andrew Short and NSR founder and patron Brad Farmer
“While declaring surfing reserves at such beautiful places like Caba(rita) are largely symbolic in nature, it acknowledges the past, the present and importantly to future generations, that surfing beaches are a valuable and integral part of our national identity and way of life and need to be respected, preserved and shared,” Mr Farmer said.
