COAST SET FOR BIG WET

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

BATTEN down the hatches – the Gold Coast is about to cop a month’s worth of rain in just four days.

The Bureau of Meteorology says up to 175mm will fall between now and Monday, with the bulk of the deluge expected to come today.

The presence of two rainproducing systems at the same time – one inland, and one out to sea – is being blamed for the conditions.

CONDITIONS were far from perfect for the beach yesterday, but Madonna Tax and Tarnia McGuire still headed for Currumbin to get their fix of surf and sand before the clouds opened.

According to weather forecasters, they had the right gear for what’s in store in coming days – wearing swimmers and carrying an umbrella – because a month’s worth of rain could hit the Gold Coast this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology says up to 175mm will fall over a four-day period.

The bulk of the deluge is expected today, with up to 100mm of rain predicted.

Weatherzone forecaster Kim Westcott said the city would be copping a double whammy of downpours whipped up by two rainproducing systems – an inland trough and another out to sea.

February is traditionally the wettest month of the year on the Gold Coast, averaging 165.8mm at the Gold Coast Seaway. But from today until Monday the weather bureau expects 175mm could fall.
