Fighting couple turn on cops

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

AN OFF-DUTY policewoman who stepped in to stop a shocking domestic violence attack in the heart of Surfers Paradise on Wednesday night has ended up in hospital after the couple turned on her.

The policewoman and another officer had just finished their shift at 11.45pm when they came across a couple fighting on the corner of Beach Rd and Surfers Paradise Blvd.

The officers stepped in to stop the attack when the fighting pair turned on them.

The female officer was injured and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital as a precaution.

A man, 30, and woman, 26, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were taken into custody and appeared in Southport Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The man pleaded guilty to serious assault of police and received a $400 fine.

The 26-year-old woman faced the same charge and had her case was adjourned.

She received bail and is due to reappear on March 22.
