LAST year a group of scientists and writers, tired of the nonsense peddled by activists, put out a book on climate change. The final chapter came from Clive James: “I speak as one who knows nothing about the mathematics involved in modelling non-linear systems. But I do know quite a lot about the mass media and far too much about the abuse of language.”

Over the years we have been lectured by Al Gore and Tim Flannery about the dangers of global warming. Gore called it “the most important political, moral, economic issue humankind has ever faced” and predicted sea levels of 20 feet swamping New York and Shanghai. Flannery said the effects would be so harsh that some Torres Strait islands might not survive and South East Queensland would run out of water.

In a panic Premier Peter Beattie spent $1 million on a desalination plant at Tugun: it was mothballed and has never been used.

And then we had climate experts like Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand telling us that unless “we did something” we were all going to fry.

In 1974 Time Magazine warned of global cooling. Within 37 years it became warming.

In 1971 a Sydney newspaper said the Great Barrier Reef would be dead in six months. Some years later, President Obama, on a visit to Australia, hoped it would stay alive long enough for his daughter to see it. It’s still there.

As Viv Forbes has pointed out

(GCB, 21/2/18), the result of all this rubbish is that we have been taken over by giant bureaucracies spending our money on a non-event.

And it’s worse than that. The obsession with “renewables” displayed by Jay Weatherill has ensured that South Australia now rivals Denmark for the highest power prices in the world.

Fortunately, the public is waking up. P.C. WILSON, MIAMI SHOCKING allegations have been made of horse doping in some of Australia’s biggest races including the Melbourne Cup – mainly Racing Victoria at this stage.

Here on the Gold Coast a valuable public asset, Black Swan Lake, worth an estimated $10m, has been “licensed” to a horse racing/gambling venue.

An industry that appears to be less than squeaky clean – while the wetlands habitat and wildlife in and around it are pushed out of their home, harmed and even drowned in mud from the dirt being dumped on them.

Something not quite right with that picture?

Commonwealth Games – welcome to the Gold Coast where greed is rampant and the environment and animals count for very little. CONCERNED RESIDENT STATE Governments need to put into the Local Government Act that all councils will hold official Australia Day celebrations or face dismissal.

They should genuinely celebrate our great nation from humble beginnings and hardships of our original pioneers, to the sacrifices of our ‘Diggers’ who fought and died to keep Australia the free country that we share today.

They fought the invading Japanese on home soil and enemies in other lands.

The only reason this generation exists (including Aborigines) is because of the sacrifices of others – they have never fought in bloody horrific wars and few would have the guts or determination to work daylight to dark every day for a lifetime like our pioneers, just so they could leave a better world for their children and friends.

Lock Australia Day celebrations into law, with powerful laws of contempt and punishment for those who insultingly dare to belittle or ridicule the sacrifices of previous generations.

The federal politicians of all parties need to come on board and legislate punishment for all who insult Australia Day or desecrate or destroy our flag.

Our flag is symbol of national pride – as we salute our flag we remember those who fought and died for our freedom, traditions and heritage. G J MAY, FORESTDALE

I JUST watched Meet the Press.

Peter Dutton, our minister for Home Affairs – if ever there was a true blue Aussie that passes the pub test this bloke does. What a pity we don’t have more like him in Government.

For me he didn’t sound negative, he sounded very even and fair in his comments with a lot of good ole ordinary Aussie common sense.

Don’t know what sort of Prime Minister he would make but he certainly couldn’t be as bad as that conceited, self serving, out-oftouch Prime Monster we have in charge now. VERN S PRIME Minister Turnbull is to negotiate with Donald Trump and China for better deals for Australia.

Prime Minister Turnbull if I remember correctly over six months ago you assured the people that you would negotiate and have very strong words with the energy companies to reduce the energy power bills for Australian consumers.

The result of your “powerful words” is that the energy companies have made record profits and the consumers have had record energy bills.

Would it not be more beneficial and more reliable if the CEOs of the energy companies negotiate better deals for Australia? ANGELO, BIGGERA WATERS PRIME MINISTER Malcolm Turnbull, who used 30 bad polls to oust Tony Abbott, is about to reach that number shortly.

If he should reach that number will he accept the fact that he is just as useless as he claimed Abbott was and do the honourable action of moving aside and giving someone else a chance to save the party.

Or is his ego such that he will brazen it out, saying I am the best person to be Prime Minister? THOMAS SAVIES, SURFERS PARADISE
