BOOST FOR WEYER’S GAMES CHANCES
LABRADOR ace Corey Weyer has been named in Australia’s squad for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in a major fillip to his Commonwealth Games dreams.
Held in the Malaysian city of Ipoh, the tournament is the last before the Games squad is selected in mid-March.
The 21-year-old Tigerstix defender’s opportunity comes after Matthew Dawson was ruled out due to injury, having fractured his eye socket in a training accident on Wednesday.
Weyer has eight Australian caps to his name.
“Corey has had a good couple of weeks in training following the Netherlands series,” Kookaburras coach Colin Batch said.
“He’s played in Malaysia before so he’ll be accustomed to the conditions and challenges that they bring.”
If he can take advantage of his chance, a Commonwealth Games berth may be on the cards.
The 18-man Kookaburras squad will depart for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Sunday with fixtures against England, Malaysia, India, Ireland and Argentina awaiting.
The tournament runs from March 3-10.
