Reality TV demeaning for participants and viewers

-

I HAVE to agree with Louise Roberts’ article “This is not good TV. It’s Sad and Pathetic” (GCB, 22/02/18).

I have never watched any of the so-called “reality TV shows” but having seen way too many adverts for them, I can only say that this is certainly not my “reality”.

I tried “social media” for about five minutes and quite frankly couldn’t see the attraction, never to “log on” again.

The adverts I’ve seen for shows like Big Brother, Married At First Sight, Yummy Mummies, Bachelor/Bachelorette, Housewives of somewhere etc, all leave an awful lot to be desired in my opinion and are not only demeaning for the participants but also for those who watch them.

I wonder, between this pathetic obsession people have with these “reality shows” and their equally pathetic obsession with technology and “social media”, if this is not the reason why today’s children are so out of control and screwed up?

Are parents “rushing through life” so they can watch this socalled “reality” garbage or go on “social media”, which means they are not putting the time into their children?

It would seem (from listening to and reading about people) that there is way too much time being spent on both so-called “reality TV” and “social media” and today’s parents are not spending real time with their children and are simply leaving them to their “own devices” (pun intended) in their bedrooms from a very young age, leaving the door open to every deviant and paedophile looking for their next victim.

Unfortunately, today’s technological world is a dream come true for every deviant and paedophile out there. GAEL BEALE, MAUDSLAND
