SUITE DREAMS FOR A PRINCE
BRITISH royalty will replace rock royalty at the Gold Coast’s only five-star beachfront resort during the Commonwealth Games.
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will take up residence in the Royal Suite at the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, at Main Beach, when they visit the Coast from April 4-6 during the XXI Commonwealth Games.
The Games will be staged on the Gold Coast from April 4-15, with the future king to represent his 91-year-old mother, Queen Elizabeth, at the Opening Ceremony at Metricon Stadium on April 4.
The Sheraton has become the preferred hotel for some of the world’s biggest rock stars to stay, with the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen and Foo Fighters all bypassing Brisbane to check into the beachfront resort on the Queensland legs of their Australian tours.
Set among six hectares of lagoons and tropical gardens, the property’s 295 guest rooms and luxury suites are completely booked out from March 29 to April 17.
The resort, which has been selected as the official Games Family Hotel, will also accommodate accredited Games officials, expected to include Prince Charles’s youngest brother, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the vice patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
The property is well equipped to accommodate two royals at once – it boasts two luxurious Royal Suites with lavish designer decor and plush amenities designed to deliver “the utmost comfort at every turn”.
The 185 sq m suites boast panoramic ocean views, full walls of windows, marble floors, a full-sized bathroom with a deep soaking bath, rainforest shower, bidet and additional powder room and a formal dining and lounge area.
The resort has become a favourite with stars thanks to its privacy and proximity to the beach, Sea World and award-winning restaurants.
The Broadwater and nearby marina mean the resort is accessible by land, sea and air.
The royals could easily travel to Games venues such as the Aquatic Centre and Metricon Stadium by boat thanks to the resort’s proximity to Mariner’s Cove and Marina Mirage.
It’s also conveniently close to helicopter landing facilities – and less than 30 minutes from Brisbane by chopper.
Prince Charles is taking on a higher profile following the retirement of his father, 96year-old Prince Philip, and the slight easing back of duties by his mother, the 91year-old Queen Elizabeth.
The tour will mark Prince Charles’ 16th visit down under and Camilla’s third.
