CLOUDS A SILVER LINING FOR BUDDING COAST PHOTOGRAPHERS

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

AFTER a humid, sweltering day in the sun, ominous clouds rolled across the Gold Coast, lashing the area with heavy rains.

But it was a photographer’s delight yesterday afternoon as the darkening clouds moved as one across the region, with dozens of snaps and videos sent through to the Bulletin.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Julian De Morton said the storm had come through thanks to south-easterly winds.

“We’ve had a substantial amount of rain (in some areas) ... mainly in the Hinterland,” he said, adding much of it had fallen within an hour.

Clagiraba copped 47mm of rain between 7pm and 8pm.

More than 35mm fell in Carrara, while Southport received 32mm.

The storm caused nearly 4000 homes to lose power, with the majority affected in the southern suburbs.

Nearly 1300 homes were affected in Tugun, while 634 homes in Currumbin were without power for hours.

Just under 1000 homes had their power restored by 8.30pm.

Mr De Morton said today’s weather would hover around 28C, with a chance of showers.
