Will calls out council over wreck yard clean-up

WILL the Wrecker says the council needs to clean up its own act before threatenin­g him about the state of his Reedy Creek property.

Ms Smith, 81, said it has been years since council had bothered to mow the nature strip in front of his yard despite the long grass being visible from the Pacific Motorway.

“Its a bit rich of them to complain about me when they aren’t doing their job,” Mr Smith told the Bulletin.

“I had to fire up the old John Deer tractor and mow it myself the other day, but maybe I should have just sent the council a warning letter telling them to do it – or else.”

A Bulletin report yesterday showed council wanted Mr Smith to clean up his property before the Commonweal­th Games.

“I’ve been here 48 years with no complaints running this business,” he said.

Commonweal­th Games Minister Kate Jones on a visit to the Coast said the matter was for council but admitted she often looked at the wrecker’s yard when driving past it.

“Look I drive past Will’s wrecking yard regularly, my mother lives at Palm Beach so I go down there a lot. It is an iconic structure here on the Gold Coast ... but certainly this is a matter said.

Mayor Tom Tate strongly defended council’s actions, acknowledg­ing Mr Smith was passionate about his wrecking yard but it was time to “move on”.
