Veg bacon ‘full of fat’

-

TRENDY soya-based bacon and sausages are often promoted as a “healthy” alternative to meat, but you may be better off tucking into a full English after all.

Nutritionist Amanda Ursell advises that many vegetarian foods are fattier and higher in calories than the meat options they seek to emulate.

For example, UK retailer Sainsbury’s vegetarian smoky bacon, made from soya, contains 309 calories per 100g and nearly 22g of fat. The store’s unsmoked back bacon contains just 233 calories per 100g and 13.8g of fat, The Sunday Times reported.

“Veganism and vegetarianism can be a very positive thing but it’s not necessarily a free pass to great health,” Ms Ursell said.
