Our Commitment

We're for you

We also have a role in championing our community, to fight for justice and hold those who lead our city to account.

PATRICK MacNamara was in many ways a quintessential Gold Coaster.

In 1885, when the fiery Irishman from Limerick set up shop in Lawson St, Southport, the Gold Coast was a phrase 70 years away from conception.

There were just 300 people living here in what was a sleepy fishing village.

But MacNamara did not see it that way. He saw a city with a big future.

So when he switched on the press to launch the Southern

Queensland Bulletin newspaper, he took a step towards that vision.

For the next 133 years, that’s essentially been the story of our great city.

People pursuing their dreams through bold ideas, tenacity and hard yakka.

Throughout that time this paper has chronicled that journey. We’ve celebrated the wins, lamented the losses, shared the tragedies and triumphs.

We’ve been there every step of the way.

Today we renew our commitment to you, our loyal readers, and to the entire city.

We are grateful to have the honour to be your paper.

We are grateful to deliver the news that matters to you when you need it. We’ve come a long way since 1885. Our newspaper lands on your lawns every morning – and that’s where it used to end.

Today that’s just the beginning. Our newsroom has transformed into a 24-7 multi-platform operation that breaks news as it happens and tells those stories in ways the likes of Patrick MacNamara would never have imagined.

Yet it’s not just about bringing you the breaking news.

As the city’s biggest media organisation, we understand that’s not enough.

We also have a role in championing our community, to fight for justice and hold those who lead our city to account.

We’ve been the bodyguard of this city since 1885.

However, few periods would rival the news organisation’s impact, influence and compassion than the past three years.

The Bulletin has made life safer for tens

of thousands of desperate Queensland women and their children by successfully campaigning for unparalleled domestic violence reform;

The Bulletin has brought warring governments together for a $500 million upgrade of the state’s busiest road, the M1; The Bulletin has almost singlehandedly ensured the second stage of the light rail was built before the Commonwealth Games;

The Bulletin has championed change for greater transparency from politicians receiving political donations;

The Bulletin has exposed the “fudging” of crime data by senior police.

The Bulletin cried and comforted when Cyclone Debbie flooding took lives, homes and livelihoods and when four people died in the Dreamworld tragedy, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the victims’ families.

We rejoiced with the community when the Titans ended their National Rugby League finals drought, the Suns featured in the first fully sanctioned AFL match in China and Hollywood blockbusters such as the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

beamed the Gold Coast to the rest of the world.

The Bulletin brings you every facet of Gold Coast life, from hard news to hard-hitting sport, from the nightclubs to the surfclubs. We bring it to you every day.

We recognise we have different roles to play that match the circumstances of the day.

Sometimes we celebrate with you. Sometimes we fight for you. At other times we simply give you the facts.

Whatever the case, we’re in your corner. Like you, we know we’re the lucky ones.

We live in the greatest city on earth.

Yes, it’s not perfect. There are times when the traffic does our heads in.

Crime is a worry. Our city’s breakneck growth is straining our neighbourhoods and threatening our beautiful environment. Paradise comes at a cost.

But we’re all in on a delightful secret – the Gold Coast is just a wonderful place to live.

And this year of course marks a decisive turning point as we embark on the greatest undertaking in our history: staging the Commonwealth Games.

The Gold Coast Bulletin commits to delivering you unrivalled round-the-clock coverage of the Games – inside and outside the sporting arenas.

We’ll capture every moment that matters – and bring it to you when you need it.

And when the athletes pack up and the show moves on, what then?

The Bulletin will work hard to ensure these Games deliver long-term benefits to the Gold Coast.

We will campaign for a legacy that enshrines our status as Australia’s fastest growing and most dynamic city.

That means we will continue to fight for the transport system our city deserves. We will never stop until we

have a sustainable solution to our troubled connection to Brisbane and a decent, properly funded public transport system.

We will push our leaders to broaden our economy, to make good on their promises to transform the Gold Coast into a research and IT regional hub.

We will fight for safer streets and better schools, for the best health care for all of us.

But above all we will listen to you. We’d love to hear what you’d like us to campaign for. What you’d like to see more, what you’d like to see less.

After all, you, our readers, are the ones who have kept us so strong since Patrick MacNamara fired up his press.

The Bulletin brings you every facet of Gold Coast life, from hard news to hard-hitting sport, from the nightclubs to the surfclubs.

We will campaign for a legacy that enshrines our status as Australia’s fastest growing and most dynamic city.
