Pair denied bail over terrifying attack

- LEA EMERY

TWO men dragged an acquaintance into a Paradise Point unit, beat him with an extendible baton and stabbed him in the elbow, a court heard on Saturday.

The alleged victim is recovering in hospital with a fractured eye socket, fractured nose, swelling and bruising on his face and a cut to his elbow.

Travis Patrick Brown, 24, and Marley Anthony Artz, 25, were both denied bail when they appeared in Southport Magistrates Court facing charges of grievous bodily harm, wounding, break and enter and wilful damage following the alleged attack on Friday night.

Police were called to Victoria Avenue, Paradise Point about 7pm following reports two men were dragging a 43year-old man into a unit.

When police arrived they saw the two men jumping over the back fence.

The dog squad found Artz nearby.

Police dogs continued to track the other man and found footprints leading to the nearby Broadwater.

Brown was found nearby, completely wet. Police will allege he went into the water to avoid detection.

The court heard the victim, John Lenard, told police he was talking to Artz when he became abusive.

Mr Lenard told police Brown arrived soon after.

Police will allege the pair began to beat Mr Lenard, who saw Brown wielding an extendible baton. The weapon has not been found.

Mr Lenard was allegedly stabbed in the elbow as he escaped. Brown and Artz began to search his unit, ripped the television from the wall and damaged a computer monitor.

Defence lawyer Dave Garratt, of Howden Saggers Lawyers, said it was clear the pair knew Mr Lenard.

“It does seem to be the defendants and the victim know each other and there is some history there,” he said.

Mr Garratt said there was no way to be sure if a weapon had been used as police had not found one in the area.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair denied the pair bail as he felt they were an unacceptable risk of reoffending. allegedly
