THREATS TO TURF CLUB A NEW LOW

-

THE debate over Black Swan Lake, or borrow pit, has been robust. People on both sides of the argument clearly believe very strongly and passionately in their positions.

There have been debates at council and protests at the site. And while the disagreements have been strong, they have, for the most part, been respectful.

Although divisive, the kind of animated debate we have seen is something to be expected in a democracy. In fact, the ability of our society to facilitate such debate, and nonviolent protest, is to be welcomed.

This newspaper is proud to have played a significant role in allowing all sides to have their say. We will continue to do so without fear of favour.

But regrettably, all of this is not enough for some people. The to and fro of democratic debate counts for little for some when they do not get their way. They instead feel the need to resort to threats and intimidation.

The sickening death threats directed at Turf Club staff and patrons are beneath contempt.

Whatever one thinks about the Black Swan Lake controversy, there is absolutely no way an issue such as this should be cause for the kind of sinister messages sent to Turf Club staff.

The Turf Club, it should be remembered, is a valuable Gold Coast institution. It more than pulls its weight for this city, drawing in tens of millions of dollars of business from visitors to wildly successful events such as the Magic Millions.

It is not an evil corporation, bulldozing all before it. While there is significant money to be made in horse racing, the Turf Club itself is a not-for-profit organisation.

It is to be strongly hoped that the police uncover the identity of the twisted individual responsible for the death threat and prosecute him or her to the fullest extent of the law.

We may not always realise it, but democracy is a fragile flower.

It is encumbent on all of us to cherish and protect it by conducting debate in a civilised manner, no matter how strongly we may feel on an issue.

Anybody who threatens violence as a means to settle an argument should be severely punished.
