Maiden victory to fuel the fire
MUDGEERABA SUCCESS
MUDGEERABA will “give it a real go” in next weekend’s Gold Coast derby after breaking through in the NPL.
Goalless and winless after three matches, Mudgeeraba reversed their fortunes at Sid Bigg Park in a stunning 4-3 victory over Logan yesterday.
Sarah Skinner netted a brace and Shelby White and Ena Tsuuzumi chipped in with one each to put a smile back on the face of coach David Thompson.
“I’m really pleased with the girls and they deserved the win,” he said.
“Once they worked out they are in a tough competition they put their head down and they have been rewarded for it.
“We just have to keep working and get ready for the next game.”
The win, however, does little to change Thompson’s estimation of his side’s ability. Despite the horror start in which they conceded 32 goals in three games, the mentor insists it’s still a case of one week at a time.
“It’s too early for that (to change our thinking).
“One game is one game; I’m too old to get carried away by one game.
“But the girls are starting to realise they can hold their own with teams in this competition.
“But I’m not getting overexcited.”
With strong knowledge of members of the Gold Coast United squad, Thompson
says there is every reason his side can halt their rivals’ march towards finals.
“It will be mixed feelings because I know some of them well – they are good girls,” he said.
“But I’m hoping we can give it a good go.
“We are both new teams to the league, so there is no reason we can’t give it a go.”
NPL’s Gold Coast derby kicks off at 5pm on Saturday at Robina Station Reserve.
